The List of Pros and Cons
Like any other antivirus software, VIPRE has its pluses and minuses. Have a look at what we have discovered when writing this VIPRE review.
Reliability and Security
When choosing an antivirus, you certainly want to know which one does a better job in protecting users’ devices from various threats. And the results of tests conducted by independent labs may give you an idea of who is the best.
Therefore, Real-World Protection Tests conducted by AV-Comparatives from July to October 2018 ranked VIPRE between fourth to fourteen among 18 antivirus products. Similar tests performed earlier that year also put VIPRE in the middle which might seem unimpressive. However, don’t get discouraged with such results since the difference between placings is often 0.1 percent only.
Note that AV-Comparatives gave the highest possible evaluation to VIPRE which is another proof of its efficiency.
Also, according to AV-Test’s Windows Home User test conducted in October, VIPRE performs better than average but still falls behind the stronger competitors. And again, AV-Test has marked VIPRE as a Top Product for its capability to fend off the latest attacks.
The results of respected agencies’ tests showed it vividly – VIPRE is worth your attention. It does a good job in protecting users’ computers against the majority of threats.
Blocking malware is one of the biggest VIPRE’s advantages. Thus, VIPRE Advanced Security managed to stop over 99% of malware in the above mentioned AV-Comparatives’ Real-World Protection test.
One of the tools that help to protect computers from malware is Edge Protection. It monitors websites users visits and makes sure malware doesn’t get in their machines. You don’t need a browser extension since the tool works in the Edge browser. But if you still want to have an extension for Chrome or Firefox, feel free to enable them from the VIPRE dashboard.
Besides, VIPRE offers free removal of viruses and malware to every subscriber. That is another good reason to become their customer since many other providers want money for such service.
Ransomware is among the most popular and unpleasant malware which hunts vulnerable devices. Thus, a good antivirus should be strong enough to take care of the threat. And the VIPRE has effective solutions for that.
Each product has built-in ransomware defense – VIPRE uses a multistep procedure, including patch management to block this kind of malware.
First, the antivirus searches for signature and hash matches which point at ransomware presence. However, VIPRE’s developers understand that this method is not enough to catch new ransomware since it has no signature. The company says they use other techniques, including heuristics and behavioral detection driven by machine learning to face more complicated threats.
Phishing is one of the oldest ways for hackers to steal users’ private data. It seems everybody is aware of basic security rules not to become a victim of phishing, but this method would not disappear. Moreover, it becomes more sophisticated.
VIPRE antivirus is ready to protect you against phishing. It has a personal firewall which carefully watches what comes in with your internet connection, including every single email that hits your inbox. And the VIPRE’s anti-phishing tools will not alert you about a threat but will also send copies of phishing emails to quarantine.
Ease of Use
Most likely, when choosing antivirus software, you want to have something simple. VIPRE scores are high on that. It is very easy to install and set up. You won’t need much time to find the necessary tools and settings.
Once you open the VIPRE’s dashboard, you will be delighted with the interface organization. The core function of the interface is to tell its user whether their computer is working correctly, the firewall is active, and the software is updated. You will know when the last scan took place and when the next one is expected.
When you install VIPRE, it will be set to an automatic daily full scan which takes about one hour to check your whole machine. But you can always choose another type of scan, for instance, quick or custom.
Quick scan is an excellent way to check the main system files, file locations, and registry keys. The approximate time of such scan is 10 minutes.
The custom scan is designed to check particular files and directories. And it is up to you to decide which files to go through. You can also start this kind of scan by right-clicking context menu and selecting “Scan with VIPRE.”
No matter what you choose, it is advisable to run a deep scan at least once a week. The full scan will check every single file on your hard drive. VIPRE antivirus is not resource-hungry, though be ready that the scans would slow down your PC a bit.
Available Package and Extras
VIPRE provides offers for home users and business networks. Let’s have a brief look at those.
Three home packages provide real-time protection and free US-based support. But they also have their peculiarities:
- Identity Shield will secure personal data, including passwords and will make sure you are not traced through webcam or microphone.
- Advanced Security will become your best protection against the most complicated viruses and malware, including ransomware, and spam. Cloud-enabled security and a firewall are also included in this package.
- Security Bundle combines the features of the two previous packages.
All the packages are only available for Windows users.
VIPRE has divided its offers for business into three sections: Endpoint Security, Email Security, and Threat Intelligence and offers some products in each section.
- Endpoint Security will protect every single computer in your organization from known threats.
- Email Security will defend you against phishing attacks, spam, viruses, and many other threats.
- Threat Intelligence is a malware protection system for business. It helps to detect and stop attacks by noticing unusual activity in the network.
VIPRE is quite affordable for home users. Thus, the prices for Identity Shield start at $19.49/year per one PC (with 35% off). Advanced Security package will cost $43.99/year per one PC (with a 20% discount). You may decide to purchase protection for up to 10 PC for one year. Before that, you may stick to a 30-day free trial to feel the taste of VIPRE’s services.
If you want to have both offers in one package, feel free to purchase Security Bundle for $55.24/year. Note that this package can be acquired for one PC only, and the free trial is not available.
To buy any of the products for business, you should contact the company’s sales team.
Support and Customer Service
If you need assistance from VIPRE technical experts, you may either contact their US-based office or use the tools provided at their website. For example, you can find information in the existing articles in Resources, submit a ticket in the Support section or leave a message in the Forum section. Note that you might have to wait for more than 24 hours to get an answer.
Is VIPRE Any Good?
By the end of our review, we have mixed feelings about VIPRE. From one hand it provides solid defense from viruses and malware which is proved by the tests. It also has extra security tools for additional protection. And this is a huge plus.
But what makes us feel uncertain is the company’s website which is not updated regularly and is somewhat messy in general. It seems like nobody cares what potential customers think.
We also don’t like that the company wouldn’t be straight about the prices for business and wants you to contact their sales team instead. It seems it is the company’s sales team and not the products that do a better job.
But what makes us happy is the option to go for VIPRE’s free trials first and then decide whether to stay with them longer. Consider doing that too.
