Norton Antivirus Review 2020

Norton Antivirus.

Norton Antivirus: Is Norton Any Good?

Our verdict? All in all, Norton Antivirus scores high if we consider its features, performance, and usability. Despite lacking a few important features, such as file encryption and a secure web-browser, the software is jam-packed with options for excellent protection, and both PC and mobile suits are present (with Android and iOS supported).

If you don’t expose your computer to especially dangerous threats (don’t visit suspicious websites or make online purchases), this solution would be enough for your devices to stay safe and sound. It is especially recommended for those who focus on the safety of the files.

Although you cannot download Norton Security for free, and packages aren’t cheap, you can get some services with a discount, for example, they have nice bundle deals for antivirus and Norton Wi-Fi Privacy VPN. Therefore, this solution would be perfect for minor businesses and corporate users (read more in our article – “Best antivirus software for your business“), as well as for personal use. It is good for the business and probably the best antivirus for home use.

The List of Pros and Cons

Although Norton Security isn’t the cheapest software option, it outperforms the vast majority of other antivirus suits, and the false positives happen rarely.

We like:
  • Easy and intuitive dashboard
  • Multi-platform support
  • Around-the-clock customer support via phone
  • Reliable file storage and backup options
  • Norton Power Eraser tool blocks suspicious software
  • Free trial for 30 days
We don’t like:
  • The software impacts performance
  • Lack of secure web-browser

Norton Antivirus is one of the most popular products on the market. But is it an excellent solution to protect you in 2020, and moreover is it a good value for money? We are here to help you find the answer.

In short, Norton does ensure excellent malware protection without hurting system performance in the course of scans. Although this solution is relatively expensive, the Premium plan is jam-packed with features, backup solution and 25 Gb of storage online. What all of the Norton packages lack is file shredding, a secure web-browser, and encryption of files.

In this Norton Antivirus Review, we will check the features provided and evaluate the reliability of the software. Read the whole review to figure out whether the program is suitable for you.

Reliability and security

According to the results of the real-world protection test conducted by AV-comparatives, Norton Antivirus detected and blocked about 99.3% of threats, which is a great result. However, 30 is above the industry average.

AV-Test Lab awarded the maximum 18 points to the latest version of Norton Antivirus (6 for protection, performance, and usability). It is worth noting though that historically Norton would on average get 5.5 points for usability.

If you try to access a website with malware in it, Norton would block the access showing a warning of danger. When trying to download an infected file, Norton would also warn you and stop the downloading process.

Viruses are moved to the quarantine folder to prevent them from harming the computer. Every time an infected file is stopped, Norton would inform you where the threat was going to install itself on the computer.

There was only one problem is that sometimes the antivirus wouldn’t block detected viruses. It means you may have to double-check that every detected threat was blocked and moved to the quarantine folder.

Norton Performance

Norton Antivirus free - how good is norton antivirus?

One of the principal Norton’s downsides is the fact that it slows computers down during malware scans. The company claims they have resolved this issue, and not the impact falls became less significant.

To check out how Norton Security Premium affects performance on Windows, we took an Asus notebook with Windows 10 OS and Intel Core i3-5005U processor. Our team performed a standard OpenOffice-based benchmark test: during the process, we matched 20,000 addresses on a spreadsheet. Before antivirus installation, it took us 7 minutes to complete the task. After installation and activation of Norton, the time grew to 11 seconds. Although this level of performance impact seems to be serious, you aren’t likely to notice it.

During the full system scan, performance dropped by 30%, so Norton Antivirus is somewhere in the middle of antivirus solutions rating in terms of system impact.

As for the speed of scanning, Norton Security displays the average result: it takes over 1 hour to scan a hard drive, while a quick scan takes 3 minutes and 20 seconds. You can accelerate the process using the whitelist: add trustworthy files there, and you will limit scanning time only to the potentially dangerous files. After doing so, you can decrease the full scanning time to 20 minutes only.

Malware ProtectionFree Norton Antivirus review - settings

Let’s get a more detailed insight into the options of malware protection.

Similar to other antivirus software, Norton offers three layers of protection including signature matching (the software is matched to the database of known malware packages). The protection is strengthened by heuristic analysis – it controls the behavior of software and checks the code of new programs to detect unknown malware before it affects your devices.

To top it off, Norton releases new signatures with updates several times a day – the samples from users’ machines are analyzed on the proprietary cloud servers. If anything is deemed dangerous, Norton’s team fixes vulnerabilities and sends signature updates. Norton features browser extensions for Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer. The extension checks destination headers for web packets for connection with known malicious websites.

What about a game mode? Although there is no game mode as it is, you can put the Norton Security application into the Silent Mode and reduce the number of updates and user notifications when the full screen and 3D graphics are running. It’s the same when you power up your computer after long-term inactivity and do the updates later to avoid slowdown.

Together with the main Norton antivirus product you get:

  • defense against spyware
  • protection of the system’s Registry file to block the installation of unauthorized applications
  • protection against ransomware and phishing

Ransomware Detection

Ransomware protection is available on every Norton antivirus version. It means that you can shop online without being afraid of malware stealing or credit card’s credentials. Besides, the files on your computer will be protected against encryption. However, with Norton Antivirus some files get lost during the ransomware.

Phishing Detection

Anti-phishing protection is included in all Norton packages. It is crucial to keep away from dangerous emails and websites: the software detects suspicious links and files before they infect the user’s computer and compromise personal information.

Ease of use

The program is user-friendly, and the vast majority of users don’t face problems using it. The installation process isn’t complicated: you download a 1 Mb patch that turns into a 175 Mb installation, type in the activation code, and all else is done for you. The program will offer you to participate in data collection (Community Watch) – you can skip it.

Launching a quick scan is a one-click affair – it takes about 7 minutes to have all your system checked. If the level of protection is optimal and everything’s safe, the front page will be colored green. Otherwise, you’ll see a red X mark near the software and components under threat. Besides, you can launch the Silent Mode and find the taskbar to do anything from updating signatures to searching for a new version.

Does Norton antivirus work for Mac? You wrote in your Norton antivirus review that the version for Mac computers is not available.

    • ModeratorModerator says:

      Hello, Jemma!
The version for Mac exists, but you need to pay for the software package in order to use it. The free version is for testing only and works on PCs with Windows OS.

  • AvatarRicky Craig says:

Hi, guys! Thanks for the review. I personally used Norton’s software for my whole life. I think that their antivirus solutions are also great, but I would definitely use a stronger firewall/VPN to be sure.

  • AvatarMartin Ortiz says:

Judging by the way you are describing Norton security, it feels that you are very biased against it. I think that it is a good program that has everything it needs to cater to a wide audience of users. Who cares about encryption? It searches for viruses and eliminates them. What else do you want?

    • ModeratorModerator says:

      Hello, Martin!
We try to abstain from biased commentary. Our primary goal is to provide an honest, professional opinion. We do not endorse neither do we try to bash software for no reason. We present arguments to back up our judgment. Hopefully, this statement clears up the situation. Cheers!

  • AvatarLee says:

I used the Norton security suite before. Stopped my subscription about a year ago. They ask too much money for the level of service they provide. I guess, to each their own. You can certainly try their services and see if they satisfy you. I personally do not recommend the software, but I cannot ignore its virtues. It’s quite good. Just overpriced.

  • AvatarAnna Mendelson says:

The customer support is very good. I think this is why they ask a higher price. They work really fast. I’ve never seen a more responsive support in my life. They do a better job than AT&T, that’s for sure!

  • AvatarSteve says:

Can I get a Norton download link?

    • ModeratorModerator says:

      Hello, Steve!
Norton 360 download link can be found on the internet.

  • AvatarHelga Kim says:

I paid for the premium package. Can’t say that I enjoyed the experience. I cannot really say that the program is bad. I just expected more for my money.

  • AvatarLouise says:

Where did you see that their scanner works fast? It took forever for the program to find all viruses. It works very slowly. It removes them cleanly tho.

  • AvatarArthur says:

Feels like an unfinished product to me. So many staple features are lacking.

  • AvatarCath MacNeill says:

I have used AVG and Mcafee (until Oct 2018), but Norton is by far the best. So easy to use and informative for non tech people. It doesnt slow down my PC – it just gets on with its job. It gives easily explained choices to optimise protection, PC performance – although the reports could be less technical and more meaningful to non tech people. And I am a dedicated customer of Norton as from now – the best. Very happy

  • AvatarAlberto says:

Is Norton antivirus free? I heard that you can use it for free. Is the free version better compared to other antiviruses?

    • ModeratorModerator says:

      Hello, Alberto!
Norton does not have a free package. However, you can use their money-back guarantee option if you feel that the level of service is not up to par with your expectations. This is essentially Norton free trial. If you didn’t like it, just ask for the refund. They will return your money, no questions asked.

  • AvatarKim Kampana says:

I honestly was shocked at the price. $70 for a year? Honestly? That’s way too much.

I have tested about 5 main antivirus programs, it was not easy to pick the best antivirus but … well, Norton has proven to be the sturdy guard for my PC system. I mean who doesn’t want to be sure that you didn’t catch any viruses while surfing the web for some news or goods.

  • AvatarTom Allred says:

Norton runs on my PCs, phone, and tablet. Haven’t had any viruses or malware. Pretty much has been invisible, which is how I like it. Had to call support because Norton was eating 30%-50% of my CPU when certain programs were running. First call was on June 27, 2019. It’s now August 13, 2019 and they have yet to come up with a solution. Their twitter “support” is nothing but canned messages. I don’t know how many times I’ve been told the “engineering team is working on it and will call me back within 24-72 hours. But no call would come. I’d have to call and beat them up for a response every time and almost every time the response would be, “we’ll call you as soon as possible”. This is the worst software support I’ve experienced in over 40 years in the IT business. I just now got off a 2.25 hr call to them, trying to get them to find and stop a logging program they accidentally left running 4 days ago that’s been filling my Drive C completely every day, requiring a reboot to restore my free space. I spoke to 4 different techs on the call, none of whom passed on any info about why I was calling to the next tech. Not even the case#. So I had to explain everything 4 times. The last guy tried to put me off until another day but I demanded they fix the problem THEY CREATED today! Just the worst “support” ever. #NortonSupportSucks

i’ve been using norton antivirus for seven month now, there have been few hiccups on the way when it tried to mark some of the photos i have downloaded from the internet as a virus.

not sure that they weren’t though… btw, the support is just awesome and very fast. norton might be a bit on the pricey side but trust me it worth it 100%

I’ve been using Norton antivirus for years and never been disappointed. It is a very good software with which everything can be secured & protected. Truly delightful product to use. I would recommend to a friend.

  • AvatarBridget Cunningham says:

April 2020–I have been a Norton customer for years. My subscription auto-renewed in January 2020. I began getting error messages on my laptop saying that my subscription has lapsed, which it had not, and that the virus protection programs could not run or update. I spent 3 hours on the phone with Norton Support for them to correct the issue. Supposedly, the issue was fixed. The same issue with error messages occurred again in February. Another 3 hour phone call, with the issue supposedly fixed. The same issue occurring in April. I had 2 more 3+ hour phone calls, with the Support person telling me in the end that he could not fix the issue and that the issue had to get raised to their engineering team and that I would hear back from them in 7-10 days! The support person had enabled and disabled dozens of settings on my computer so that my computer function was negatively impacted. I ended up having to spend another 5+ hours on the phone with Dell Support. In the end, my computer function had been so negatively impacted by Norton Support that Dell had to do a complete factory reset on my laptop. They had to remove Norton from my computer as a part of the exercise.
I since spent another hour on a chat with Norton trying to find out when Norton Support is going to rectify the issue and get Norton replaced on my computer. I am paying for this service that I don’t even have. They said another 7-10 business days! They have limited staff due to Coronavirus and everyone is working from home?? How does that even happen to a tech company??!! No capability to work from home. Are you kidding?? So, in the meantime, I have no virus or malware protection, and I am inundated with ad’s. Awful. And I have no remedy. Beyond angry and I will post negative reviews on every site that I can find.

  • AvatarRichard Stevens says:

You have given Norton a top rating and I have been using Norton on my computers for several years. However, after I had tried a Software cleaning program for a year then decided to uninstall it, it left an annoying nag pop up that Norton did nothing about. I tried Malwarebytes and it immediately detected it as malware and eliminated it. Shouldn’t Norton have done that? What other programs would have worked like Malwarebytes since I notice that Malwarebytes doesn’t get a top review from you?
